Golden Hour Cloud Sea

Golden Hour Cloud Sea

KEY SCENE ELEMENTS

Design Goal

The project started from an earlier worldbuilding idea centered around traveling across a massive ocean of clouds.

During a university assignment focused on transportation design, the concept evolved

into a traversal-focused catamaran built for a stylized fantasy environment.

Focus Areas

  • atmospheric exploration

  • readable silhouettes

  • large-scale traversal

  • calm ambience and lighting

Design Exlporation

Early Idea

Initial Concept explored Kite-like traversal using wind for movement.

3D Research & Analysis

Studied real-world catamarans, their mechanics, sail function and key Characteristics.

3D Blockout

First 3D blockout to explore the proportions and the overall silhouette.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenges & Solutions

Catamaran Movement.

Catamaran Movement.

Catamaran Movement.

Challenge:

  • The traversal shots initially felt too static and artificial

Solution:

  • Added subtle looping rotation and vertical movement to the catamaran

  • Designed natural spline paths instead of straight linear movement

  • Used controlled animation to create a calmer cinematic motion style

Wind Illusion.

Wind Illusion.

Wind Illusion.

Challenge:

• The environment lacked movement and wind presence during slow camera shots

Solution:

• Created layered atmospheric planes using animated noise textures
• Positioned multiple wind layers along the camera path
• Simulated directional airflow by moving textures across static planes

Cloud Ocean.

Challenge:

• The cloud surface initially lacked the illusion of endless scale

Solution:

• Positioned displacement planes only within visible camera areas
• Angled outer cloud layers to extend the perceived distance of the environment
• Added floating cloud forms to break up repetitive surface shapes
